Internet retailer Amazon.com has begun taking early orders for Microsoft's long-delayed Windows Vista operating system and said it will ship the software on January 30, according to its Web site Wednesday.
The operating system will be sold in multiple versions targeted at consumers and businesses.
According to Amazon.com's website, Windows Vista Business, will cost 299 U.S. dollars, similar to the price for Windows XP Professional.
The consumer version, Windows Vista Home Basic, will cost 199 U.S. dollars, the same as Windows XP Home.
Windows Vista Premium, offering entertainment capabilities such as the ability to record live television, is listed at 239 U.S. dollars.
The company also is hoping to sell consumers another version of Vista -- called Ultimate. The version, gearing toward home users who also want to do some work from the family den, is listed for 399 dollars on Amazon.com's website.
Microsoft spokesman Lou Gellos declined to comment on the Web retailer's pre-sale, saying the software maker is still completing its pricing model for Windows Vista.
Seattle-based online retailer spokesman Sean Sundwell said Amazon.com can't be certain when Vista will be released.
The retailer-listed ship date is Jan. 30, which Sundwell said is an estimate based on Microsoft's public assertions that it plans to release the consumer version of Windows in January.
